A Campsite, Upstate New York - Tuesday

Memorial Day weekend was rarely great for Steve most of the time. And this year he'd had to keep up the PR appearances the majority of the weekend.

Which was why Tony had gone up to meet him for a de-stressing mini trip before going back to real life.

Why camping had been the plan was a real mystery to everyone involved, but there they were.

"It's really not this difficult," Tony muttered to himself as he assembled the tent. Luckily Steve had taken the dog for a quick walk and couldn't see how perplexing the luxury tent was proving to be.

Steve had taken the dog for a walk, looped back to see zero tent and had looped back out for another walk and was finally back. "Hey," he said. "How's it going?

"Great!" He had the sticks sorted out and found there was an extra. At least, it looked like there was an extra. Oh god, this tent was going to be the end of him.

So. Not great.

"You look very organized," Steve said optimistically as Patriot immediately sat in the careful pile of sticks.

"It's a new tent." And also the only one put together outside of classes.

"That makes sense," Steve said. "Would you like some help?"

"Couldn't hurt." Oh, it could. But let them hope!

Steve leaned in to kiss him. "It'll be just swell."

Or maybe not.

Tony smiled into the kiss. "I'm just glad to be able to get you alone."

"Me too," Steve said. "I'm so glad to see you both."

"You made it through the parades at least," Tony said as the dog made sure to sprawl out over the one piece of the tent they needed.

"So much waving," Steve said, shaking his head.

"Well, tonight we will build a campfire and have s'mores and look at the stars in blissful solitude."

Together.

Steve sighed happily. "That sounds swell. Do you want me to set up the fire?"

That he knew how to do!

"It would be a big help," Tony replied. Also, s'mores were very hard to screw up, so they were safe there.

Steve kissed the top of his head. "I think I have sausages for sticks, too."

"Oh, you get to explain to the dog why he can't have any." Tony was going to give that dog bits of sausage no matter what.

"Oh, he's getting one but he might not be allowed in the tent," Steve said.

Because industrial-grade sausage farts.

"Oh, the tent has different compartments," Tony said brightly. "Once... I get it completed."

"It does?" Steve asked excitedly.

"It's a very fancy tent." Too fancy, one might even say.

"I'm really looking forward to it," Steve said, smiling from his little pile of sticks.

Tony grinned at him for that. "Maybe we could make this a tradition," he suggested.

"A camping tradition?" Steve asked a little dubiously.

"Or just a post-holiday trip?" That seemed more likely.

"That seems like a very good idea," Steve said more enthusiastically.
