Stark Tower, NYC - Wednesday Afternoon

Tony had put off meeting with Maria Hill for as long as Pepper put up with ducking out of those meetings. Which meant he was finally at the point where he had to actually sit down with the woman.

Without a crisis happening.

"Acting Director Hill is here, sir. Shall I allow her in now?" JARVIS asked like he could skip out of this meeting without Pepper making crazy eyes at him.

"Send her in," Tony said, leaning back in his chair to watch the doors to his office open and Maria Hill march in like an invading force.

She came to a halt before reaching his desk, stance as rigid and military precise as she normally had when dealing with him. "Stark."

"Director Hill."

"You know what this meeting is about."

Of course he did. She'd only tried to corner him about it half a dozen times before now. "And you know my stance hasn't changed," Tony replied with one of his PR smiles, leaning forward against his desk. "So, I don't exactly understand why we keep doing this dance. If you wanted to take me up on that date, you could just say so."

And yes, the annoyed little lip curl that got out of her was completely worth the hell he'd get later on. "This is going to happen sooner or later, Stark. You know--"

"They haven't even managed to pass the mutant registration act and that actually has support," Tony said, cutting her off. Between the X-Men's lobbying and his own, it wasn't exactly likely to get off the ground outside of the usual hate groups and sensationalist news programs. "So tell me how this is inevitable again?"

The look she gave him for that said all sorts of things about how little she wanted to even be asking for his help. "Because if things like Texas keep happening, people aren't going to keep trusting masked vigilantes."

Low blow with that one.

"We'll cross that bridge if we come to it," Tony said, pushing himself up to stand. "If that's all you have to say, I think this meeting is over."

Hill turned on her heel, striding out of the office before he could do something like dismiss her. "When, Stark. This isn't an 'if' scenario anymore."

Tony stood there for a few minutes even after the doors to his office closed again. He sifted through any recent anti-mutant or anti-super hero sentiment circulating online to see if there really had been any changes to warrant this fun little chat.

Better safe than sorry.

"JARVIS, keep an eye on Osborn's media presence. I don't want to be surprised like this again."

"Of course, sir."
