SHIELD Helicarrier, Friday Night
Maria Hill | With the vote for the Superhuman Registration Act coming up fast (and very little doubt on whether or not it would pass Which would be why it was important to discuss such matters with the less publicly accepted figure head of the community. You can thank the Skrulls for being shuffled to the side here, Steve. "Captain." |
Captain America | "Deputy Commander Hill," Steve said warily, unwilling to show any of his cards any earlier in this meeting than he had to. Even though he was reasonably sure he knew what it was about. Skrulls ruined everything. |
Maria Hill | It was part of being a Skrull. To be fair, they were still a little suspicious that Steve might be one still. Despite all the evidence to the contrary. You can thank Nick Fury and his instilling of extreme paranoia in his subordinates for that one. "Acting Commander," she corrected. Until a replacement was picked by people who had no clue how to actually run SHIELD. Ugh. "I'm not going to pretend we don't know exactly what this meeting is about." |
Captain America | "Well, then maybe you could enlighten me," Steve said, because he was still clinging to shards of hope that the political process might work like it was supposed to |
Maria 'So Done With This Shit' Hill | Hill gave him an annoyed look for just forcing this expository dialogue out there. "We already know about the meeting going on at your little mansion. We want to know if we have their support for the registration act, Rogers." |
Captain 'Equally Done With This Shit' America | "Well, I can't speak for everyone," Steve hedged, because there was a difference between dictatorship and democracy, Maria. |
Maria Hill | If he started a lecture on democracy, Maria was going to end up doing something drastic to escape it. "I'm not asking you to," she replied. "I want to know your opinion." |
Captain America | "My personal opinion," Steve began, knowing this was going to be unpopular, "is that I cannot support this law." Because seriously. |
Maria Hill | "Is that so." Really, she should have expected that. "Wouldn't have pegged Stark being more pragmatic than you." Okay, jumping the gun a little there, but he'd fall into line. |
Captain America | Had she met him? He was all about idealism, hello. Also, dammit, Tony. "Tony and I don't always agree." But he was optimistic that if he talked to Tony he could get him to see sense |
Maria Hill | So much optimism there. So, so much. "I suggest you learn to agree," Hill said. "This act is going to be passed before the end of the month and you don't want to be on the wrong side of the law, Captain." That was reading a little threatening because it was... a little threatening. |
Captain America | "The act hasn't been passed yet," Steve pointed out. "And my identity has been public knowledge for quite some time now, so I'm not really concerned about that." And once it was passed it would be subjected to legal challenge through the proper channels! That was how this worked, right? |
Maria Hill | YOU PRECIOUS LITTLE LAMB. "Maybe not you, but anyone in a mask who isn't complying will be treated just the same as we do any other superpowered criminal." Meaning jail. Luckily there was no literal sadness jail in this universe. |
Captain America | "Then it's a good thing it's not a law yet, isn't it?" Wow, Maria was a lot more hostile than Steve would have expected for an informational meeting about a bill. Steve wasn't even touching the fact that the punishment for failure to register seemed out of proportion to the offense even without the literal sadness jail. He thought anyone with any common sense would agree with that and modify or vote against the bill. Steve really was a precious lamb. |
Maria Hill | Steve really needed to remember he lived in a place where a guy from the future showed up to kill him because he was somehow, in some way, maybe, sort of, possibly responsible for the guy's wife being in a time coma. So. "And when it is? Is this going to be a problem?" |
Captain America | Oh, Marvel. "I just said I don't agree with the bill and won't support it, so..." Did Maria maybe have a memory problem? |
Maria 'Bringing Out The Big Guns' Hill | Which would be why she already had a number of SHIELD agents ready and armed for this. Preemptively. Because she wasn't stupid when it came to threats. "Then it looks like we're going to be at an impasse." A heavily armed impasse as he was suddenly surrounded. |
Captain 'Is The Big Gun Here' America | Wait, was she serious right now? "All this over a bill?" Steve asked incredulously. No, really, was she serious? Because if she was she was going to need way more guys. |
Maria Hill | Excuse you, she had an appropriate number of agents here. "All this over protecting civilians from when you people go rogue. Like your friend Pym." |
Captain America | Steve wouldn't exactly call him and Hank friends these days...but that wasn't the point here. "I don't think you understand what you're doing here." Look up 'unnecessary escalation' in the dictionary and you saw a picture of this scene. Oh, well. She clearly wasn't willing to be reasonable. Steve went for his shield. |
Maria 'Made A Poor Choice' Hill | Well now they were going to use that as 'he pulled a weapons first'. So congrats on helping out, Steve! "Take him down!" Maria ordered, pulling her own sidearm and moving for cover to fire at him. With tranquilizers. Geeze, people. |
Captain 'Jumping Off Things He Shouldn't' America | Sorry, no, Steve was not sticking around for this. Steve would be leaving now. Yes, he was aware they were on a helicarrier. He did not see that as a problem. He'd figure it out. |
