Agency Formally Known As SHIELD Safehouse - Newark, NJ, Wednesday Afternoon

Tony Stark

Well, he had to hand it to Osborn (or, more likely, whichever agent had been tasked with this job) it had been smart to keep Maya out of the usual SHIELD safe houses. Even if that meant having to go to Newark to find her. He'd apologize to Jessica some other time for bringing her to New Jersey.

Maybe with cake.

"Ready to go?" Tony asked, eyeing the house that looked perfectly normal if you couldn't feel the sheer amount of surveillance equipment hidden around the area and wireless communication devices on agents scattered around the neighborhood.

Jessica Drew

"Out of Newark? Always. To the safehouse? Sure," Jessica quipped. This was what you got for bringing her to Jersey, Tony. This would happen until the cake was on her fork.

Tony Stark

The cake would happen! It just wouldn't be expensive cake. Sorry, Jessica.

"I think they picked Jersey for this very reason," Tony replied with a sigh. Too many superheroes were New Yorkers.

Jessica Drew

"In my world, Osborn kept all of his shady stuff in Jersey because of that," Jessica said. "So did Justin Hammer, actually. And Galactus touched down here. Man, Jersey's even worse than I thought."

"But anyway. Let's move. The longer we wait out here, the longer somebody has to realize that we're suspicious."

Tony Stark

"Hammer too?" Tony made such a face. He was never coming to New Jersey ever again. "Okay, I've got their communications and surveillance systems ready for a shut down. Won't let us have a long chat, but it'll be enough before back up comes running."

Jessica Drew

"If they react too quick, I'll slow them down," Jessica said. Van doors, house doors, any kind of doors that might open suspiciously quickly once Tony did his thing, she would web shut. She hoped it wouldn't come to that since it would give them away to others, but she wasn't about to get caught before they got inside. "Ready when you are."

Tony Stark

Tony closed his eyes and concentrated. "Three, two, one..."

Well, there were at least fifteen people deeply alarmed by this sudden cut in their network. But that was just in the area.

"They'll bring it back up in ten, move."

Jessica Drew

"Already moving," Jessica said, sprinting toward the safehouse. She saw a van door start to open across the street, but was able to put a stop to that with a quick shot of webbing.

Tony Stark

Oh, they were going to get that poor kid back in New York in so much trouble with that.

But that wasn't on Tony's mind as he ran after her, making a beeline for the door where all the intel Jessica had found put Maya as staying. Once he found that was locked, he put his shoulder into it--

"Ow. Jesus, did they reinforce this thing?!"

They did indeed, Tony.

Jessica Drew

Jessica snagged each side of the door frame with a web line and started stepping back, stretching out the lines. "Probably a good idea to duck, Tony."

And then she stopped sticking to the ground and launched herself at the reinforced door with her slingshot attack.

The door itself held up pretty well. That didn't do it much good when the frame shattered, though. The door, with Jessica riding it, fell into the foyer.

Tony Stark

Once he brushed off the splinters from the door frame, Tony peered in after her, eyebrows right on up. "Nice one, Drew."

Maybe they should pay attention to the two agents rushing them now instead of being proud of their judicious use of physics?

"Down!" he snapped, lifting his hand to fire the gauntlet.

Jessica Drew

Jessica rolled forward off the door and stayed low to the floor, sticking a hand to the door in case she needed to launch it as a projectile.

Tony Stark

For the moment, the two agents who had been about to shoot them were neutralized in a heap thanks to a repulsor blast. And it was silent.

"...why does the silence concern me?" Tony asked, moving into the house, but sticking to the wall in case there were more.

Jessica Drew

"It shouldn't for the moment. No more danger down here," Jessica said, picking the door up to web it back into place for now, just in case anyone tried getting in. "But the file seemed to indicate she was in the basement, and I don't trust what kind of security they might have down there."

Maya Hansen

Yes, the basement is where they wanted her to stay. Which would be why she had taken the noises of a fight to immediately get the hell out of the basement. You know. Where people would be looking for her."

"What the hell, Tony?" Maya demanded, brandishing a kitchen knife that had seen better days.

Tony Stark

"Maya. Long time no see." What with prison and being framed and all.

Jessica Drew

"I really thought the lack of mentions of security in the basement meant there would be serious security in there," Jessica said. "Guess I'm overestimating these guys. Hey, Maya."

Maya Hansen

Well, there was a panic room down there. And Maya in no way trusted that it could keep out a real threat, all things considered.

Maya turned her attention from Tony to Jessica, holding out the knife like it would help in this situation. It would not.

"What do you want?"

Tony Stark

"Mostly to talk," Tony replied, frowning at the whole knife thing, but trusting that Jessica had it handled. "How are things? Enjoying working for Osborn to frame me for murder?"

Yeah, he'd had a trying few weeks. Tact was gone

Jessica Drew

Jessica wasn't having the knife thing, so she shot a webline at it and tried to pull it away. She didn't have much of substance to add, she just wanted to break the tension a little.

Maya Hansen

Maya jumped in surprise, backing up into the door frame behind her now that her sad, sad knife had been taken away. "You put me in jail. Did you expect me to be grateful?"

Tony Stark

"You assisted a domestic terrorist!"

Like. Seriously now.

Jessica Drew

"And before you try suggesting that Tony's one, too, we all know that's not true," Jessica said. "I'm cutting off that argument before you even try it, lady."

Maya Hansen

Oh sure, ruin her line. Maya shot her a poisonous look. "I wasn't going to say that."

She really was.

"I didn't know what he wanted my research for. You have to believe that."

Tony Stark

"I don't know what to believe with you anymore, Maya." The women he knew a long time ago never would have done any of these things. Funny how the world changed them both.

Jessica Drew

"I'm agnostic about that stuff, personally," Jessica said. "I think the present stuff is way more important. Like why are you here, holed away in freaking New Jersey where nobody who didn't really want to find you would think to look? What does Norman Osborn want from you?"

Maya Hansen

"I--" She had her concerns about that. More than a few, to be honest.

Tony Stark

"And maybe some thought to what'll happen to you when he gets it," Tony added.

Jessica Drew

"Norman Osborn is a whack job sadist who will kill you if you're lucky," Jessica said. "But as far as I'm concerned, you have a chance to make up for your past screw ups by screwing things up for him. And we can help you get the hell away from here at the same time."

Maya Hansen

"And go where?" she asked. "He's a dead man walking and you're--I have no idea who you are, actually."

Tony Stark

"I can still get you somewhere off their radar," Tony replied, more than a little grateful that Jessica was there because he hadn't been feeling nearly as generous or levelheaded on the matter. "If you help us."

Jessica Drew

"And if you don't want to, the door is... well, kind of open. But we've been noisy and made a mess of things, so there's going to be reinforcements coming soon," Jessica said. "And I don't think they're going to take you at your word if you say you didn't help us."

"Honestly, we didn't mean to turn this into a blackmail situation. It was supposed to be more of a rescue op."

Maya Hansen

Maya pulled herself up to her full height, not going to let this situation cow her any more than she'd let everything leading up to now.

"Fine. But you have to promise me I'll be safe."

Tony Stark

Well, Tony could really only think of one person off the grid and trustworthy enough for this sort of thing.

"You'll be as safe as we can get you. Just... try not to make him angry," he replied. "You wouldn't like him when he's angry."

Jessica Drew

"You really have to warn me when there's going to be Hulk stuff," Jessica told Tony under her breath. She wasn't expecting any Hulk stuff here.
