Well, the good thing about being able to technopathically feel your psychotic, monster counterpart was knowing where they were in relation to you. Also when they suddenly stopped existing.

Tony sighed after the buzz in the back of his head had disappeared, hunkering down to find what else he could in case this... whatever it was... didn't go away just yet. He wasn't brooding over anything. No, of course not.

That would be silly.

Steve shoved his shoulder. "Knitting was very manly in World War II."

Tony did laugh at that, swaying a little at the shove to bump into him as he came back. "I don't doubt it. I'm just picturing you knitting and it's... an interesting image."

Steve laughed. "I was terrible at it, but it beat having holes in my socks."

"I tried knitting once," Tony said, pulling his feet up to tuck up on the couch. "I'm good at small details, you know? I was not good at those details. I was not good at all."

"What did you try to make?" Steve asked, standing up to gather everything remotely blanket, quilt, or towel-like and burying Tony in them.

This was feeling a lot like Brooklyn, all of the sudden.

"A scarf. Rhodey's sister couldn't figure out how I managed to screw it up so badly," Tony said, raising his eyebrows as he looked through one of the rags. "Half of these are for you, right?"

"Of course," Steve said. "I'm just getting you to warm them up for me first."

He disappeared into the bedrooms to grab the blankets left there, too.

Tony had avoided looking too closely into anything beyond what he could use to build something. He did not want to know the history of what happened with the other him here.

He let out a breath, trying to spread the blankets out in a way that would work. "There's a campfire with people too," Tony called after him.

Never mind that wasn't where Tony was either.

"Yeah, but that involves moving," Steve said.

"Hopefully things will go back to normal soon." That'd been the hope, right?

Steve nodded, bringing another armful of blankets out, then sitting down next to Tony again. The sofa creaked alarmingly. "We took at least one of the heavy hitters out today. That has to help, right?"

Tony's eyebrows shot up a little at the noise. Well, they'd just have to be still to be safe.

"I'm oddly flattered to be a heavy hitter," he said adjusting the pile so Steve got enough to stay warm.

Steve was basically a giant, sassy space heater, so this was going to get cozy in a bit.

"I wish it hadn't been you," Steve admitted quietly. "It was tough to do what was necessary."

Yeah, like Tony would complain about being warm.

Tony shuffled a little, ignoring the protests of the couch to press his shoulder against Steve's. "If it was easy, everyone else could do what you do."

Steve sighed. "True. Probably wasn't any easier on Clint. At least the girl with the glowy sword was all business."

Tony winced, sagging a little against him. Don't notice any of that.

"I'm sorry. I should have--I should have been the one there."

Steve poked his shoulder, hard, then left his hand there. "You shouldn't have been there," he said. "Remember the nose bleed?"

"I should have done more," Tony insisted. Because he always felt he should have done more. Always. "Not made you and Barton deal with it."

Steve poked him again. "You didn't make us do anything."

Nope. Forced them into it. Gunpoint might have even happened. It was all very tragic.

Tony let out a sigh, finding a spot to stare at for a moment. "Yeah," he muttered. "Remind me not to go evil and crazy in the future, will you?"

Steve slung a companionable arm around Tony's shoulders--just shy of a headlock, but closer than a hug. "Of course."

Tony was just going to allow it because it was warm. Not because he needed any comfort. Don't be ridiculous.

"You're like a furnace," he muttered, latching onto non-emotional conversation.

"Yeah," Steve agreed with a smile. "Most popular guy in a foxhole. All the Commandos wanted to be with me when the temperature dipped."

"It's the tights, isn't it?" Tony teased, closing his eyes and smiling as well.

"I didn't wear the tights in the field, idiot," Steve said fondly.
