Washington D.C., Memorial Day - Monday Afternoon

Though they'd spent the first half of the day with Steve's obligations and Tony going to visit Rhodey and Carol, now they were meeting back up in D.C. in an attempt to make the day a little less somber for a whole variety of reasons between the two of them.

Tony tried his best not draw attention to himself in the classic sunglasses and baseball hat method as he waited along the parade route for Steve to arrive.

It was super effective. Kinda.

Just go with it, okay?

"You're lucky it's so charming." Charming. Sure.

"If that's what you say," Steve said, smiling a real smile for the first time in what felt like all day.

"I'm very charmed," Tony assured him with another quick kiss. "Swept off my feet."

"Good," Steve said. "That was what I was trying to do."

"Oh, please. You do it without even trying," he teased, cuddling in close.

"That's the lucky part," Steve said a little wryly. "I'm generally really, really bad at this."

"You get in your own head about it," Tony said, tapping his temple.

Steve nodded. "I do," he admitted.

"But I promise you," Tony said, kissing that same spot. "You are much more charismatic than you think."

"Thanks," Steve said. "I'm okay with big groups, but I'm still kinda rusty one-on-one."

"Can't hide there," said someone with experience in that. "Or you can, but it's so much harder."

"Exactly," Steve said. He kissed Tony's cheek. "It's why it was so nice to come home today and not have to hide from you."

"I never--" He kissed Steve intently. "--never want you to feel like you need to."

Steve curved his hands around Tony's face and stayed close. "You see every unheroic part of me."

"You've literally watched me eat coffee grounds," Tony pointed out, eyes crinkling into a smile. "I've been in a relationship where--where there was no rest from the whole persona thing. It's not a good experience."

"It sounds incredibly tiring," Steve said earnestly.

"Very," Tony said, tilting his head in Steve's hands. "Which is why you deserve these moments."

Steve leaned in and kissed him. "You do too."

"Aren't we lucky then?" Tony murmured with complete sincerity into the kiss.

"Very," Steve replied softly.

Tony smiled, soft and private as he stuck close to Steve. Because he didn't even have words for that.

Steve kissed him again, then rested his head against Tony's chest, feeling content. That was an emotion he wasn't used to feeling on Memorial Day.

"Take a nap," Tony said, running his fingers through Steve's hair in a pattern that only made sense to him. "I've got you."

"Promise?" Steve mumbled. "There'll probably be nightmares."

"I'll wake you up if you want me to," Tony offered.
